Joshimath — The Winter Seat of Lord Badri & Gateway to Auli

Joshimath is one of the most important towns in the Garhwal Himalayas — spiritually, strategically, and historically. Located at 1,875 metres in Chamoli district, just 45 km before Badrinath, it serves as the last major town before the high-altitude shrine. In winter, it transforms into Badrinath's representative on earth when the main temple closes and the deity is moved here.

What is Joshimath?

Joshimath (also known as Jyotirmath) is significant for multiple reasons:

  • It is one of the four Amnaya Mathas (monastic centers) established by Adi Shankaracharya

  • It houses the Narasimha Temple — the winter home of Lord Badri-Vishal

  • It is the base for Auli (skiing destination) via Asia's longest ropeway

  • It is the gateway to the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib (via Govindghat)

Narasimha Temple — The Winter Seat

The Narasimha Temple in Joshimath enshrines the image of Narasimha (man-lion, the fourth avatar of Vishnu). When Badrinath Temple closes in November, the divine palanquin carrying Lord Badrinath's deity is ceremonially brought to this temple, where it stays until the Badrinath reopening in May. During winter, the Narasimha Temple IS Badrinath — and pilgrims who visit in winter can take darshan here.

A remarkable feature of the Narasimha idol here is that one of its arms is gradually thinning. According to legend, when the arm breaks completely, the Nara-Narayan mountains (flanking Badrinath) will collapse, blocking the current road. Lord Badri will then manifest in a new location — Bhavishya Badri — near Tapovan in the Niti valley.

Adi Shankaracharya's Seat

At Joshimath, the Shankaracharya Math still operates where the great philosopher-saint meditated under a Kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling mulberry tree) that is allegedly over 1,200 years old. The tree still stands in the Math premises and is considered one of the oldest living trees in the Himalayas.

Joshimath Land Subsidence — 2026 Update

In January 2023, Joshimath made national headlines when multiple houses developed cracks due to land subsidence. The government has been monitoring the situation closely. As of 2025, the situation has stabilized for most areas, but some zones remain restricted. Pilgrims should stay in pre-verified hotels and check current advisories from Uttarakhand Tourism before booking Joshimath accommodation.

Accommodation and Hotels

Despite the subsidence concerns, Joshimath has several good accommodation options on stable ground. Mid-range hotels offer comfortable rooms, mountain views, and hot water — significantly better than anything available in Badrinath town itself. Many Char Dham travelers base themselves in Joshimath and day-trip to Badrinath.
